157 perish as Ethiopian Airlines flight crashes

All 157 passengers aboard an Ethiopian Airlines' Boeing 737 on a regular flight to the Kenyan capital Nairobi, are now known to have died after their plane crashed six minutes after take-off from Addis Ababa's main airport on Sunday morning.

The plane dropped from the skies shortly after departure from Bole International Airport, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Ethiopian Airlines in a statement confirmed that the aircraft B-737-800MAX with registration number ET-AVJ took off at 8:38 local time from Bole International Airport and lost contact at 8:44 a.m.

“At this time search and rescue operation are in progress and we have no confirmed information about survivors or any possible casualties,” a statement from the airline said.

“It is believed that there were 149 passengers and 8 crew on board the flight, but we are currently confirming the details of the passenger manifest for the flight,” added the statement.
