The plane dropped from the skies shortly after departure from Bole International Airport, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Ethiopian Airlines in a statement confirmed that the aircraft B-737-800MAX with registration number ET-AVJ took off at 8:38 local time from Bole International Airport and lost contact at 8:44 a.m.
“At this time search and rescue operation are in progress and we have no confirmed information about survivors or any possible casualties,” a statement from the airline said.
“It is believed that there were 149 passengers and 8 crew on board the flight, but we are currently confirming the details of the passenger manifest for the flight,” added the statement.
