The 21 Malawian nationals who were arrested and detained by the police in eSwatini have been freed after a month in detention.

The foreigners entered the country illegally and were caught while on board a cargo truck on September 18, 2019, after which they were arrested.

During their first appearance in court they mentioned that they were coming from South Africa and were escaping from the xenophobic attacks that were taking place in that country at the time.

Their release and the dropping of charges came after the Malawian Consul in eSwatini held a meeting with the Lubombo Senior Magistrate on issues that this publication were not privy to.

The Malawians are currently kept at the Malindza Refugee Camp.
