Nearly 20 percent of the maize crop in Mozambique’s Inhambane province has been affected by an armyworm outbreak, provincial agriculture and food security director Filomena Maiopue said on Tuesday.

According to Maiopue, about 45 out of 260 hectares put under maize crop in the province have been affected by the outbreak.

She said the most affected districts are Vilankulo, Massinga, Panda, Morrumbene, Funhalouro, Jangamo, Inharrime, Homoíne and Zavala.

"In order to mitigate the impact of the oitbreak, the process of plant treatment is under way with the involvement of the producers of the most affected districts," Maiopue told APA.

She said the pest is controllable and that her department is implementing measures to control the outbreak and prevent it from spreading to other districts.
