The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has condemned the attack in Mali on 20 January 2019 that killed 10 Chadian peacekeepers, who were members of the United Nations Mission Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).

“The Chairperson extends his deepest condolences to the Government of Chad and the families of the deceased. He wishes a swift recovery to the injured, and extends his gratitude, on behalf of the African continent, for their courage,” the AU said in statement on Tuesday.

Mahamat called on the authorities in Mali, and the signatory armed groups to the peace agreement, to deploy every effort to identify the perpetrators, and bring them to justice as soon as possible.

He reiterated the African Union’s full support to and solidarity with the government of Mali in their efforts to bring durable peace for all its citizens.

Mahamat further wished to pay tribute to the courage of all peacekeepers on the African continent, who continue to serve at great personal risk and sacrifice.
