AU to erect monuments to honour former Ethiopian leaders

    APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia)

The African Union (AU) has decided to erect monuments to honour former Ethiopian leaders Emperor Haile Selassie and the late prime minister Meles Zenawi for their contribution to creating the former Organization of the African Unity (OAU) and the AU.

The decision was made Tuesday at the closing ceremony of the 29th AU summit held at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the theme: “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investment in the Youth.”

Speaking at the press conference held following the summit, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said African leaders have reached agreement on erecting monuments for Haile Selassie and Meles Zenawi within the AU premises.

On behalf of the government of Ethiopia, Desalegn thanked African leaders for their recognition to Ethiopia’s contribution to Africa’s political and diplomatic evolution.
