Botswana in foot and mouth disease outbreak scare

    APA-Gaborone (Botswana)

The Botswana government said Tuesday it was investigating a case of a suspected foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in Sehithwa in the northwest of the country.

Director of veterinary services Letlhogile Modisa said his department has suspended the movement of cloven hoofed animals in Ngamiland district, the area under which Sehithwa falls.

Modisa said some cattle in the area were found to have symptoms of foot and mouth disease and that a team of veterinary officials has been dispatched to carry out further investigations.

Botswana is prone to FMD outbreaks despite the fact that the southern African country produces the vaccine for the disease.

Outbreaks of the disease are a usual occurence in the country where cattle ranching is one of the mainstays of the economy, after diamond mining.
