Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi says his government will consult neighbouring countries before taking a decision on the recommendations of the cabinet sub-committee on the lifting of a ban on elephant hunting.

Speaking during a public gathering on Thursday in the resort town of Kasane in northern Botswana, Masisi said all stakeholders would converge in Maun town in northwestern Botswana to discuss the report prior to government making decision.

According to Masisi, he is scheduled to meet the presidents of the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation (KAZA) member states ahead of the Maun meeting as the decision would affect their countries.

KAZA comprises Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Masisi said the report would be made available for public consumption but the final decision on the report rested with government.

He said his government does not have any plans to kills elephants aimlessly, adding that conservation measures have been in place even prior to the imposition of the ban.
