President Paul Biya has appointed Joseph Dion Ngute as Prime Minister, in a decree read Friday by the public broadcaster, CRTV.

His first task as Premier is to propose ministers who will be appointed by the President going by the country’s constitution.

Until his appointment, Ngute was a minister at the presidency, and he takes over from Philemon Yang who nearly ten years was Cameroon PM.

Age 65, the new Premier hails from the English-speaking South West region, which has seen unrest over the past two years.

A lawyer and diplomat, Ngute graduated from the former University of Yaounde in the 1970s before completing his training in Great Britain.

He is a member of the central committee of the ruling Democratic Rally of the Cameroonian People (CPDM).
