Ghana: Floods destroy 7,000 hectares of farmlands

    APA-Accra (Ghana)

About 7,000 hectares of farmlands have been submerged in flood waters in northern parts of Ghana, following the release of excess water in the Bagre dam in Burkina Faso.

The effect is also felt in some communities as houses collapsed and submerged in floods, while the Ghana National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is battling to manage the disaster.

Some of the affected residents in the Upper East Region are now taking refuge in classrooms and homes of some relatives, according to the Ghanaian Times reports on Wednesday.

The reports said that the deputy minister of Food and Agriculture in charge of Crops,

Dr. Sagre Bambangi, had paid a working visit to some of the affected farmers with the view of finding ways of assisting them.

He was informed by Mr. Francis Ennor, Director of Regional Agriculture, that more than 9,226 farmers from 65 communities were affected by the floods.

He said that about 15 districts in the Wa Municipality were affected by the floods.
