APA-Lilongwe (Malawi)

Over 60 Indian nationals have been arrested for allegedly working at one of Malawi’s sugar processing factories without proper documentation, immigration officials said on Thursday.

Immigration department spokesperson Joseph Chauwa said the Indians were arrested at Salima Sugar Factory on Wednesday for working without work permits.

The factory is a joint venture between the Malawian government and Aum Sugar Company of India, which controls 60 percent of the shares.

The arrests follow a visit to the factory by Homeland Security Minister Richard Banda on Tuesday.
