Mozambique’s gold output rose by nearly 50 percent in 2021 to reach a record 800 kilogrammes, a report by the Kimberley Process Management Unit revealed on Monday.

According to the report, bullion production rose from 545kg in 2020 to over 800kg last year, but the figure could be higher if it were not for the impact of movement restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Production for 2021 had been expected to reach around 550 kilos, but so far we are above 800 kilos,” the report said.

Statistics for the provinces of Manica, Zambezia and Tete were not available, the report said.

The output from artisanal miners was also not captured during the compilation of the report.
