Satterfield will make his first trip to the region together with Assistant Secretary Molly Phee a week after he replaced Jeffrey Feltma as US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa.
The duo will follow up on President Biden’s constructive phone call with Prime Minister Ahmed Abiy on Monday, according to Ned Price, spokesperson of States Department.
They will encourage government officials to seize the current opening for peace,” he added.
In Riyadh, the Assistant Secretary and the Special Envoy will attend a meeting of the Friends of Sudan.
The meeting aims to marshal international support for the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission to Sudan (UNITAMS) in its efforts to facilitate a renewed civilian-led transition to democracy.
Following the Friends of Sudan meeting, the Assistant Secretary and Special Envoy will travel to Khartoum.
The two officials plan to meet with pro-democracy activists, military leaders, political figures and others in Sudan.
“Their message will be clear: the United States is committed to freedom, peace, and justice for the Sudanese people,” the spokesperson claimed.
