Ramaphosa orders probe into mass death at S/African tavern

APA-East London (South Africa)

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered an investigation to the death of 22 teenagers at a tavern in the coastal city of East London in the early hours of Sunday.

Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the president is “concerned about the reported circumstances under which such young people were gathered at a venue which, on the face of it, should be off limits to persons under the age of 18.”

“The president expects the law to take its course following investigations into the tragedy,” Magwenya said.

The government has since ordered the tavern owner to close his business until a full investigation is conducted.
