Sahara: Washington renews support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative

The United States, on Monday, reiterated its consistent position on the Sahara issue, noting that the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco is “serious, credible and realistic.”

“The United States continues to consider the autonomy plan presented by Morocco as serious, credible and realistic,” and as an approach to meet the aspirations of the populations of the region, the U.S. Department of State said in a statement.

In the same statement issued on the occasion of the visit to Morocco of the head of U.S. diplomacy, Antony Blinken, Washington also expresses its support for the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General, Staffan de Mistura, in conducting the political process on the Sahara issue, under the auspices of the United Nations.

The U.S. Secretary of State, on Monday, began a three-day official visit to Morocco under the sign of “commitment to security and prosperity,” says Washington, highlighting a “deep and lasting” relationship.
