Senegalese religious leader Sheikh Béthio Thioune dies

The leader of the Thiantacounes (sect of the Mouride brotherhood) in Senegal, Sheikh Béthio Thioune has passed away in Bordeaux, France after a long illness.

The guide of the Thiantacounes, went to France last January for medical care.


81-year-old Thioune was on Monday sentenced to ten years with hard labour for complicity to double murder in the so-called Médinatoul Salam case.

He was convicted in connection to the murder in 2012 of two of his disciples who were killed before being buried in a mass grave in the bush.
