Togo: Workers' syndicate abandons ‘silent march’

APA-Lome (Togo)

The Workers' Synergy of Togo (STT) has issued a statement on Wednesday, abandoning a “silent march” which was scheduled for Saturday.

The march was proposed after the authorities in the capital Lome imposed a ban on public demonstrations.

The STT wanted to decry what they called the "deafening silence of the government despite the urgency of the social demands” for the released of some teachers detained at the Kara prison.

Referring to the rationale for banning the march, the STT said it has been requested "to respect the agreement of the suspension of public demonstrations by the political parties and unions.”

The STT statement said: “Therefore, we ask all comrades to kindly stay silent but mobilized.”
