Togolese opposition announces Lome, inner cities demos

APA-Lome (Togo)

A coalition of 14 opposition parties in Togo on Tuesday called a series of demonstrations in Lome and other parts of the country.

According to the opposition schedule, a visit to Sokode prison is scheduled for Thursday, 12 July, as well as information and awareness raising meetings in Mango and Bafilo.

Demonstrations are banned in the three inner cities since September 2017, as the government claimed a loss of weapons from the military during meetings held by the opposition.

According to a statement by the opposition, the protests are aimed at strengthening the people's resolve for "the restoration of the 1992 constitution in its original form, institutional reforms, the revision of the electoral framework, among others”.

In the last round of political dialogue in Lomé, the facilitators had, in their communiqué, urged the government “to study the possibility of extending the right to protest to the entire country in accordance with the public order and laws in force so as to ensure the freedom to demonstrate.”
