Tropical cyclone Gombe has claimed 12 lives in Mozambique since it hitting the shores of the southern African country at the end of last week, the National Institute for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction (INGD) announced on Sunday.

In a statement, INGD said the dead were mostly from the coastal province of Nampula while one person was reported missing in the neighbouring Zambezia province.

"The deaths were caused by collapsed houses and fallen trees," the statement said.

More than 30,600 people have been affected by the cyclone in the two provinces since the storm made landfall last Friday, with 40 individuals injured and over 3,000 houses damaged.

The cyclone has left a trail of destruction especially in the Nampula capital, Nampula, where several streets have been rendered impassable and agricultural fields flooded.
