The African Union (AU), in an official statement issued Monday, took note of the final results of the presidential election in Burundi published on June 4.

In this regard, the chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat “wishes full success to President-elect Evariste Ndayishimiye in the exercise of his new responsibilities.”

After May 20 presidential election, he “urged Burundian political and social stakeholders to engage in dialogue to address, in a spirit of tolerance and taking into account the best interests of the nation, the challenges facing the country.”

The AUC chair also reaffirmed “the solidarity of the African Union with the people of Burundi and expressed its willingness to work with the new authorities in a new era of fruitful cooperation between our continental organisation and Burundi in its legitimate quest for peace, security, stability, democracy and prosperity.”
