    Ethiopia: People detained on suspicion of corruption hit 42

    The number of government officials, businesspersons and brokers detained on suspicion of corruption in Ethiopia has hit 42, reports said on Saturday.

    Some 34 suspects were arrested last Tuesday and 8 more were added to the list since then, Getachew Ambaye, Ethiopia’s Attorney General, said in a briefing on Saturday.

    Three of the additional suspects are from the Addis Ababa housing development project office- namely Saba Mekonnen, Shimeles Alemayhu, and Tsedale Mamo.

    The 42 suspects were arrested for alleged embezzlement of over $58 million from the Federal Roads Authority, more than $51 millionr from Ethiopian Sugar Corporation, $47 million from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Cooperation and over $1.7 million from Addis Ababa housing development project office.

    According to Getachew, the government is taking the measures based on reports of the Federal and Addis Ababa city auditor generals, tips collected from employees and the public as well as evidences obtained from the study conducted by the government itself.

    The operation launched to take into custody suspects will continue, the Attorney General said, urging the public also to carry on providing tips to relevant bodies.

    Some 34 of the suspect appeared before court last Thursday.
