The Executive Secretary of the National Electoral Commission (CNE) said on Friday that CNE is technically able to organize the country’s next parliamentary elections in May 2018.

Pedro Sambú gave the guarantee at the end of a meeting with the head of state, President José Mário Vaz.

“The President of the Republic was receptive to our explanation,” said Pedro Sambu, adding that “as we all know, José Mario Vaz is the only person who has the prerogative to decide on the date of the vote.

“We had delivered the electoral calendar since last year and we were awaiting the decision of the President of the Republic. In the calendar, among other things, we have planned to update the electoral lists before the elections,” he further announced.

With regards to the election of the new President of the National Electoral Commission, he said this was not discussed with Vaz at the meeting, and added that this is an issue that falls within the exclusive competence of the National People’s Assembly (ANP).

“Under the law, it is possible that the Executive Secretary replaces the President of the National Electoral Commission, but it will be up to the National Assembly to decide on this, once we are at the end of our term,” he further stated.
