    Kenya holds talks with EU on trade, security

    APA-Nairobi(Kenya)

    President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday in Nairobi met a high level European Union (EU) delegation led by Ms Federica Mogherini, the Vice President of the European Commission who also doubles up as the EU's High Representative for Foreign Policy.

    The talks between the President and Ms Mogherini, centred on trade relations and Kenya’s role in regional security.

    Ms Mogherini assured President Kenyatta of EU’s commitment to continue supporting peace and security activities in the horn of Africa and the entire East and Central Africa region.

    Mogherini commended Kenya for its role in pursuit of peace and security and leadership in driving regional integration.

    Earlier, Ms Mogherini inaugurated the new European Union Embassy in Nairobi, the second largest globally, signifying the growing importance of Nairobi to the union.

    The EU leader also held a meeting with Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for foreign affairs, Monica Juma with their talks focusing on cooperation between Kenya and the EU on regional peace and security, blue economy, trade and multilateralism.

    Mogherini who is currently on a visit to the Horn of Africa will conclude her visit by travelling to Djibouti. She will meet President Ismail Omar Guelleh, Foreign and International Cooperation Minister Mahmoud Ali Yousouf, as well as Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Mahboub Maalim.

    She began her visit on Monday in Mogadishu, Somalia where she met Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khayre.

    The EU is working actively to strengthen its partnership with the region which shares many common interests with the European Union, from tackling climate change to boosting investment, to better managing migration and creating opportunities for youth.
