Speaking at a meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners on Thursday in Abuja, the Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced that a total of 14 million new voters were registered in 16 months across the country.

Yakubu explained that the new voters were registered during the continuous voter registration (CVR) exercise, which ended last week.

He added that the number of persons who took part in the CVR exercise represented a 21 percent increase in the total figure of eligible voters in the country.

Nigerians are expected to go to the polls early next year for the presidential and general elections.
