Five excelling African female scientists will on Thursday receive distinction of excellence awards form the African union (AU) Commission for their achievement in the field of sciences, APA learnt here on Tuesday.
The African Union Women Scientist Regional Award ceremony will coincide with the African Union (AU) Day, observed every 9 September all over the continent.
“The African Union Commission is committed to support the popularization of science and technology among African citizens, empower them, celebrate their achievements and promote all efforts to transform scientific research into sustainable development,” said AU.
The AU Commission, with support from its Development Partners, launched the prestigious African Union Scientific Award Programme in 2008.
The programme is implemented at national level for young researchers, at regional level for women scientists, and the continental level is open to all scientists.
The regional award programme is designed to enhance the participation of African women in science and acknowledging their contribution to the use of science in addressing African challenges.
The programme is run by the Regional Economic Communities.
