At least ten people were killed over the weekend in a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Ethiopia’s Amhara regional state, a local official has disclosed.
The catastrophic landslide, which occurred in Telemet district at a locality called Aban, left 10 people dead and injured eight others, Tesfaye Workneh, head of government communication office of the district, said in a statement.
Workneh said locals and rescue teams are searching for the dead bodies of some of the victims.
This year Ethiopia experienced recurring landslides in different parts of the country – the devastating being one that happened in Gamo Gofa, South Ethiopia in July 2024.
A total of 257 people were killed in that tragic incident. Similar accident also occurred early this month in Wolayita zone of southern Ethiopia, killing 13 people.
Workneh said the landslide also killed 35 heads of cattle and inflicted damage on crops standing on 30 hectares of land.
According to the official, the 480 households with a total of 2400 family members have been subjected to displacement due to the latest landslide in the east African country.
