15 people have died and two others injured as heavy rains lashed the Malian capital Bamako on Wednesday night, causing serious flooding, APA learned from official sources.
“Following heavy rainfall on Thursday, May 16, 2019, floods have occurred in some areas of Bamako, causing extensive material damage and loss of life. A provisional assessment shows that 15 people have died,” the Security Ministry said in a statement.
Flooded neighbourhoods include Niamakoro, Kalaban-Coro, Missabougou and Faladiè, which are located in full floodplains along the river.
“Search and rescue teams are already on the ground to assist populations in distress,” the ministry added.
The national platform for disaster risk reduction held an emergency meeting over the disaster.
The authorities have urged the population to observe the necessary precautions at the beginning of winter.
