APA-Dakar (Senegal) – In January 2023, the Senegalese government took a series of measures to tackle road insecurity.
However in the space of a few months the country has been hit by another road tragedy.
Seven months after some sixty people were killed in the center and north of the country, a road accident on Wednesday, July 26, killed twenty-three passengers on a bus in Ngeune Sarr, a town in the north of the country.
According to initial reports, the bus hit a tree, injuring about fifty people.
“I would like to express my condolences following this morning’s terrible road accident on the Route Nationale Deux (RN2) in Ngeune Sarr. I offer my sincere condolences to the families of the 23 people who died and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. I once again call for greater caution on the roads,” said President Macky Sall on social media.
In January, following the tragic accident in Kaffrine (central Senegal) that killed 40 people, the Senegalese authorities announced some 20 “urgent measures” to improve road safety.
These included the creation of a road inspection structure, a ban on the use of public transport vehicles on intercity roads between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., a limit of ten years on the age of passenger vehicles and fifteen years on the age of goods vehicles, and a ban on the import of used tires.
