Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has admitted an anomaly which reveals that close to 250, 000 ghost voters (who are no longer alive) have been discovered on its electoral register.
In a statement seen by APA on Thursday, some 500, 000 duplicate record of would-be voters were also found while at least 200, 000 were included in the register with fictitious or invalid documents, according to the KPMG, the auditing firm contracted to conduct an inquiry into the integrity of the registration.
Kenyans go to the polls to elect a president on August 9th 2022 with incumbent Preident Uhuru Kenyatta not eligible to run at the end of his second five-year term.
The IEBC has cleared veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, Vice-president Raila Odinga, David Mwaure and George Wajackoyah to run for Kenya’s highest office.
The candidates have not reacted to reports about the registration anomalies.
IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati said as a result of these anomalies, the certification of the final voters register would be delayed until they are looked into.
The commission was originally scheduled to publish the register on Thursday June 9th but has announced 20th June as the new date for this.
