Three Nigerian clubs won their home matches on Sunday with Rivers United defeating the Champions League holders Wydad Casablanca in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
According to local media reports on Monday, the visitors opened scoring through Bouly Sambou in the 32nd minute to give Wydad the lead.
Malachi Ohawume of Rivers United got the equalizer for his team just two minutes later, while the winning goal was scored in the 53rd minute of the game by Paul Acquah.
The two teams will play the second leg of the encounter on Friday, October 14, 2022.
It will be recalled that before the match on Sunday, the Rivers State Governor, Nyson Wike, promised the players of the Port Harcourt-based club of $40,000 to each player if they reach the group stage of Africa’s premier club competition.
The Nigerian second club, Plateau United defeated Esperance of Tunisia 2-1 in a CAF Confederations Cup on Sunday in Abuja.
Anice Badri of Esperance scored the first goal in the 27th of the first half, but Ifeanyi Emmanuel drew level in the 35th minute, while Mustapha scored the winner. The reverse feature is scheduled to hold on October 14, 2022.
In the third match played on Sunday, Kwara United of Nigeria beat RS Berkane 3-1 in the second-tier club football competition.
The match, which was played at the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium in Lagos saw the visitors take an early lead, scoring in the 8th minutes through Djibril Ouattara.
The Nigerian club scored their three goals in the second half with Taefeek Ahmed scoring the equalizer in the 72nd minute, while Wasiu Jimoh added another one seven minutes later and Barnabas Daniel headed in the third goal to bring the score line to 3-1 in favour of Kwara United Club of Nigeria.
The second leg will be played in Morocco on October 14, 2022.
Although the three Nigerian clubs won their matches on Sunday, but football analysts in Lagos are, however, doubtful if the clubs will repeat the same feat in their second leg encounters since the score lines were slim in the cases of Rivers United and Plateau United.
