The tremor was recorded late at night on Wednesday, October 16th, 2024, at 11:11 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface; the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported it.
GFZ was the first seismological agency to report the event which occurred for the second time in 10 days.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It did not cause significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
The epicenter was about 23 km (14 miles) northeast of Awash, located 221 kilometers east of Addis Ababa,
Residents in various parts of Addis Ababa reported feeling the tremors of an earthquake. The earthquake, which lasted only a few seconds, has caused concern across the city. A local resident shared, “It was especially strong upstairs. The building shook for a moment.”
