The demonstration that caused the skirmishes was called by the Federation of Students and Schools in Cote d’Ivoire (FESCI) to demand the resumption of classes following a teachers’ strike in January.
There were running street battles involving the police and students of two high schools in the city.
Around noon on Tuesday, heavily armed anti-riot police units patrolling the yards of the two institutions succeeding in dispersing the protesters who responded by throwing rocks back at the security forces.
On February 26, FESCI organized a peaceful demonstration in Abidjan and several cities to demand the resumption of classes.
This demonstration took place without major incidents in Abidjan where the march was even supervised by the police.
Since late January a teachers’ strike paralyzed the educational system, disrupting classes in Abidjan and in the interior of the country.
The disgruntled teachers are demanding, among other things, an increase in housing allowances and the reinstatement into the public service of tutors sacked in 2014.
