The Gambia’s Scorpions on Wednesday evening held hosts Comoros to a 1-1 draw in the opening day fixture of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers for Morocco.
Two spectacular free kicks from both sides were the main highlights of the match played in high tempo and produced chances at both ends.
Musa Barrow’s thumping free kick restored parity minutes before the break after the hosts went ahead midway in the first half when Youssouf M’Changama’s spectacular set piece.
Gambia coach Jonathan McKinstry will be happy to avoid defeat in the opening campaign in Group A to repeat the achievement of his Belgian predecessor Tom Saintfeit who for the first time in the history of the Scorpions clinched back-to-back qualification to Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon (2022) and Ivory Coast (2024).
Coach Jonathan McKinstry’s side host Tunisia in a home fixture to be played in Morocco on September 8th.
This ‘home away from home’ fixture is due to an ongoing FIFA ban on the Independence Stadium which is still undergoing renovation.
