A senior official from Rwanda Football Federation announced that Rwanda national football team’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Cameroon in the evening of Tuesday will not be open to supporters in line with Covid-19 social distancing regulations.
The match is set to be played at the Stade de la Reunification in Douala where a win against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, who have already qualified for the continental showpiece, would take Rwanda to eight points but they will also need Cape Verde, who beat Cameroon last week, to lose to Mozambique.
Cameroon top the table with 10 points, followed by Cape Verde at 7 points. Rwanda is third with 5 points, while Mozambique are bottom with 4 points. Other than already-qualifed Cameroon, all the other three teams are vying for the remaining one ticket in Group F.
Commenting on the match, Rwanda head coach Vincent Mashami said he was confident that Amavubi (Wasps) can get a crucial away win against Cameroon and boost their chances of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the second time in history.
“The win against Mozambique last week boosted our confidence, and we will need a similar winning attitude against Cameroon,” Mashami said.
Rwanda has not featured in the continent’s biggest football competition since 2004.
“My message to the players is that we all still have the chance to qualify, we have 90 minutes to try to get the qualification and that’s why we are here and the players know it.” Mashami said
