This project builds upon the AfDB’s significant contributions to Tunisia’s road network over the past decade, with the bank having previously supported the upgrade of approximately 4,000 kilometers of roads.
The current phase will focus on improving 188.9 kilometers of roads across seven governorates, including Kef, Kasserine, Sousse, Sfax, Kairouan, Siliana, and Gafsa. These regions, despite their economic potential, have been hampered by poor road conditions, hindering economic growth and limiting access to key services.
The project is expected to enhance road safety, facilitate the movement of goods and people, and stimulate economic activity in the targeted regions. Furthermore, it will create employment opportunities in the road maintenance sector, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises.
Solomon Quaynor, Vice-President of the AfDB, emphasized the project’s potential to improve connectivity to border regions with Algeria, contributing to regional economic integration and reducing youth unemployment.
