The visit aimed to assess the progress of AfDB-funded projects in the country.
Nwabufo commended the well-developed infrastructure and ongoing studies at the Sub-regional Centre of Excellence in Nutritional Sciences (EANSI). Funded by the AfDB at over $9 million, the center provides vital training in nutrition and food processing for students across East Africa. Burundian Education Minister François Havyarimana echoed Nwabufo’s positive remarks, highlighting the center’s contribution to a skilled workforce in Burundi.
Nwabufo, accompanied by Minister Havyarimana, also visited the port of Bujumbura. This project, co-financed by the AfDB and the European Union, is undergoing modernization efforts. While there, discussions focused on the rising water levels of Lake Tanganyika, attributed to climate change. The AfDB pledged its support to mitigate potential damage.
Nwabufo further met with Burundi’s private sector representatives, commending their role in the nation’s development. Following productive talks, she announced a dedicated AfDB mission planned before year-end. This mission will assess private sector needs and explore specific areas where the AfDB can provide targeted support.
Nwabufo’s visit underscores the AfDB’s commitment to fostering progress in Burundi through investment in education, infrastructure, and the private sector.
