Africa has reported 1944 deaths in a week until Thursday due to coronavirus, representing a 10 percent decrease compared to the previous week’s casualty rate, Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa- CDC) has said
In his weekly report on the situation of COVID-19 in Africa, Africa CDC’s Director, Dr. John N. Nkengasong said the continent recorded a total of 77,000 new cases in the stated week, showing a 4 percent increase compared to the preceding week.
East Africa reported the highest number of new cases accounting for 35 percent of the total new cases in the continent. North Africa 24 percent, South Africa 19 percent and west and central Africa each reported 11 percent of the total cases in a week.
The continent recorded a total of 4.2 million cases of COVID-19 as of Thursday, accounting for 3.3 percent of the total cases of the pandemic reported globally, Nkengasong said
Africa reported 3.7 million recoveries from the pandemic which claimed a total of more than 112.000 lives. “The fatality rate in the continent represents 2.7 percent of the global deaths caused by the disease,” he said.
Five African countries namely South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Ethiopia and Egypt carry 65 percent of the caseload of the pandemic across.
