The Under-20 Women’s football team of Ghana, the Black Princesses on Thursday defeated the Falconets of Nigeria 2-1 to clinch the Gold at the ongoing African Games in Ghana.
The match, which went into extra time and dragged far into the night, saw the Ghanaians come back from a goal down in the first half of the encounter to secure the important victory.
The Falconets went into the lead in the 22nd minute of the match through Loveth Edeh, who cashed in on a faulty move by the Ghanaian goalkeeper who dropped the ball she caught before the oncoming Nigerian striker.
The Black Princesses got the equalizer in the 76th of the game through Tracy Twum after a series of poor passes and few attempts at the opponent’s goal.
The match, which recorded a number of injuries and stoppages went into extra time when the score line was 1-1 at full time.
The goal scored by Mukarama Abdulai in the 98th minute of the extra time gave the victory to the Ghanaians as the Falconets failed to get the equalizer despite the efforts made to score another goal.
This victory was well received by Ghana’s football supporters, who kept on with their drumming and dancing far into the night as the match ended close to 12 midnight.
The Nigerian team had to settle for the Silver medal.
