Two of the leading political parties in the presidential race in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP) and another party the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have called for a fresh presidential election to be conducted soon in the country,
The leaders of the three parties told a news conference on Tuesday in Abuja that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has failed to comply with the electoral guidelines by not uploading the results of the election electronically as stipulated by Section 60 of the Electoral Act 2022.
According to these party leaders, the February 25 presidential election has been “irretrievably compromised”, alleging that Saturday’s presidential and parliamentary elections were manipulated by officials of INEC at polling units by their failure to upload results electronically on the commission’s Results Viewing Portal (IReV).
The Chairman of LP, Mr. Julius Abure, who spoke on behalf of the LP, PDP and the ADC, said that the election was not free and far from being fair.
He added that there were “ongoing cancellation of results from areas of strength of the opposition parties”.
The leaders of the three parties declared a vote of no confidence on the Chairman of INEC and asked him to immediately step aside for an unbiased person to take over and conduct a fresh election.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the PDP, Prof. Iyorchia Ayu, said that the INEC Chairman should not turn himself to a “dictator” and demanded that he should step aside for another person to take over.
