Zimbabwe’s troubled national carrier is making frantic efforts to rejoin the International Air Transport Association (IATA) by the end of June, a senior official said on Monday.
Air Zimbabwe acting chief executive Tafadzwa Zaza said the airline has made progress in terms of clearing its arrears to IATA.
“The process is underway to rejoin IATA, which I think in the next three months we should be a member of the IATA Clearing House,” Zaza told the state-run Herald daily.
The IATA Clearing House provides settlement services in the air transport industry. It is one of several IATA settlement systems which enable reliable and efficient movement of funds around the industry.
Air Zimbabwe was suspended from IATA about three years ago over unpaid debts estimated at over US$140 million and safety concerns.
Membership in IATA would offer a wide range of perks to Air Zimbabwe, including more partnership opportunities and financial security.
