APA – Algiers (Algeria) – At least 34 people were killed and eleven more injured in a violent collision between a passenger bus and a commercial vehicle on Wednesday, July 19, in Tamanrasset, southern Algeria, the Civil Protection said on its Facebook page.
The accident was followed by a fire. The deceased died of burns, according to the same source. The tragedy occurred at around 04:00 a.m. in Outoul (21 km west of the town of Tamanrasset) on Highway NR1,
which links the north and south of the country.
This accident once again raises the issue of the increasing involvement of buses in road accidents in Algeria, comments the Algerian electronic website TSA. In addition to dangerous driving, passenger buses are often in a deplorable state of disrepair and poor maintenance.
Since the beginning of the year, numerous road accidents have caused many deaths on the country’s roads. Trucks and buses are behind the most dramatic accidents in Algeria.
On July 5, eight people were killed in an accident on the East-West freeway at Hammam El Biban in the wilaya of Bordj Bou Arreridj. On February 24, 10 people were killed when the bus carrying them fell into a ravine in Tikjda.
