September 17, 2024, will mark a historic day for the nation as President Tebboune officially takes the oath of office for his second term. The ceremony will take place at the prestigious Palais des Nations in Algiers, attended by senior government officials and representatives of the country’s highest authorities. This solemn event follows an electoral process in which Tebboune was re-elected with a commanding 94.65 percent of the vote.
Upon his arrival at the Palais des Nations, President Tebboune received full military honors. He saluted the national flag and reviewed the various detachments of the National People’s Army (ANP) as they paid him homage. This military display serves as a powerful symbol of the unity and strength of the Algerian state, highlighting the crucial role of the ANP in ensuring the country’s stability and security.
The ceremony commenced with a recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an, followed by the reading of the official communiqué by Mr. Omar Belhadj, President of the Constitutional Court, which confirmed Tebboune’s election victory with 94.65 percent of the votes cast.
Next, the First President of the Supreme Court, Tahar Mamouni, read the oath text. With his right hand on the Holy Qur’an, President Tebboune echoed Mamouni’s words in accordance with Article 89 of the Constitution.
Article 90 of the Algerian Constitution outlines the oath of office for the President, emphasizing a solemn commitment to uphold and honor the Islamic faith, defend the Constitution, ensure the continuity of the State, and strengthen the democratic process. The President also pledges to respect the people’s free choice, safeguard the integrity of the national territory, and protect fundamental human and civil rights.
Tebboune’s swearing-in has elicited mixed reactions from the political landscape and civil society. Supporters view him as a leader capable of steering Algeria towards a prosperous and stable future, while critics express concern regarding ongoing challenges, particularly in governance and transparency.
