Several sectors of the civil service in Algeria were disrupted on Tuesday, by a strike of workers organized by 30 organizations, grouped within the Confederation of Algerian Trade Unions (CSA).
The strike was decided to demand measures to support the “eroded” purchasing power of workers and households.
“There is a consistent adherence from workers in different sectors, especially education, taxes and to a lesser degree the health sector. There is also the adhesion of local communities in some wilayas (departments),” explained Boualem Amoura, coordinator of the CSA, in a statement to the Algerian press.
The overall rate of participation, according to Boualem Amoura, was around 70 percent in all sectors affected by the strike. The head of the CSA believes that “the rates of monitoring of the strike will increase again tomorrow when the total paralysis will be reached.”
Until 18:30 this Tuesday (local time/GMT+1), the authorities have not reacted. Last Thursday, the Ministry of Labor declared the strike illegal because “the CSA is not yet approved.”
