APA – Djamena (Chad) – In April 2023, the two countries expelled each other’s ambassadors.
The diplomatic crisis between Chad and Germany is moving towards a happy ending. On Thursday July 20, 2023, the Federal Foreign Office appointed a chargé d’affaires to the German Embassy in
Chad.
The new chargé d’affaires is Günter Leo Overfeld, a career diplomat who recently served as chargé d’affaires in Madagascar. He is now in charge of the ambassadorial duties on an interim basis until
Berlin appoints a new representative.
Since April 2023, the two countries have had no ambassadors. The Chadian authorities expelled the then ambassador, Jan-Christian Gordon Kricke, for “discourteous behaviour and disrespect for diplomatic
customs.”
Germany also retaliated, expelling Mariam Ali Moussa from Berlin.
Since then there has been deafening silence. The day-to-day running of the German embassy has been entrusted to the French ambassador.
Germany’s appointment of a chargé d’affaires is a sign that the tension between the two countries is easing.
It remains to be seen whether Chad will appoint its chargé d’affaires or a new ambassador in the coming days.
