South Africa’s Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse is facing a vote of no confidence next week for work laxity and failing to deliver various services to residents of Africa’s biggest city, APA leant on Thursday.
Led by the ruling African National Congress Regional Chairperson, Dada Morero, the Democratic Alliance (DA) mayor is charged with negligence of the city’s townships.
“Residents of Soweto in Johannesburg will tell you that she has not done a good job. Everything in Soweto has collapsed,” Morero said.
He said there was “no robot that worked in Soweto. If they work, its maybe two or three robots.”
He added: “The potholes are increasing in Soweto. No interest to address townships — but everything else in the suburbs (where most whites live) seems to be going on very well.”
The South African Municipal Workers’ Union also said this week a vote of no confidence against Mayor Phalatse would soon be tabled at a council meeting.
Samwu said this was because the DA-led administration continued to display arrogance and did not consider the needs of workers in the metro.
The future of their members depended on the mayor leaving office and being replaced by someone who would take into consideration issues that affected the workers’ welfare, the union added.
The intended motion of no confidence follows the removal of Council Speaker, Vasco d Gama, a DA member, from the city of Johannesburg last week.
