As Sierra Leone prepares to mark 63 years of independence, there have been reports in Freetown of a foiled coup, APA has learnt.
The Sierra Leone Police have announced the arrest of several alleged coup plotters who are currently being detained.
The accused include some military officers who were wanted for an earlier coup attempt last November when renegade soldiers were engaged in a firefight around the capital.
Several people were killed during the November 26th incident.
According to police the latest to be apprehended were planning to cause public disorder during the Ramadan and on independence day which falls on April 27th when a demonstration was also being planned in protest over the high cost of living and perennial blackouts.
The government of Julius Maada Bio has not commented.
President Bio in power since 2018, was re-elected for another five-year term last year.
Prior to the latest reports of an abortive coup, the attention of most Sierra Leoneans has been drawn to the devastating impact of the drug Kush on young people, prompting a government-led campaign against it.
