An assassination attempt on Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has failed after drones fired on the junta head missed its target, APA can report quoting a spokesman of the Sudanese military on Wednesday.
Army spokesman Nabil Abdallah speaking to the media accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of launching a pair of drone strikes targeting Burhan as he was presiding over the graduation of some military intakes.
Five people were killed when the drones hit the military base in the town of Gibait located 100km from Port Sudan.
Video footage of Wednesday’s ceremony shows columns of uniformed intakes marching before the explosion from the drones.
Abdallah said Burhan had escaped unharmed.
Drones have been used by both sides during the conflict.
There has been no RSF reaction to the accusation.
Since April 2023, Burhan’s loyalists in the Sudanese army have fought to a stalemate elements of the RSF led by archrival Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo.
The two general who were allies after the coup which toppled long term ruler Omar al-Bashir in 2019 quickly became foes over the nature of the transition to civilian rule.
The alleged assassination attempt if confirmed to have been the handiwork of the RSF could scupper a proposed peace deal to be brokered by the United States in August.
Thousands of people have died and over 10 million more have been forced to flee during the conflict which continues to rage on despite several talks for a ceasefire.
UN relief agencies had severally warned of a serious huminatarian crisis exacerbated by widespread human rights violations blamed on both sides of the conflict.
