APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) At least six Internally Displaced People were killed and several others wounded amid clashes between ethnic Oromo and Somali forces in south eastern Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has disclosed.
In a statement issued on Monday, EHRC said the killing of the IDPs took place at place called Koloji where other undisclosed numbers of civilians were also killed during the clash over a disputed land.
“It is so saddening that the IDPs were killed in the temporary refugee camp where that had stayed for more than two years,” the statement quoted EHRC’s Deputy Commissioner Rakeb Melese as saying.
Neither the federal government nor the regional governments comment on the fighting or the causalities occurred.
The EHRC, however, revealed that there have been clashes between the Oromia and Somali security forces along their common border since mid August 2023.
Melese appealed the federal government to stop the fighting and look for peaceful solution. it also added that the government . She also called the federal government to hold the perpetrators accountable and ensure law and order in the area.
Over the weekend, EHRC said government security forces have continued perpetrating human rights violations against civilians in Ethiopia’s Oromia region.
In a statement the Council released Friday, the council said that four members of the same family were killed in an attack inflicted by militants in Gida district, Ejere locality, East Welega Zone of the Oromia Region on 13 September 2023.
