APA-Nairobi (Kenya) Henry Rono, a retired Kenyan athlete of the 1970s has died in a Nairobi hospital on Thursday at the age of 72, Athletic Kenya confirmed.
Rono, a holder of multiple world reche ords in t3000m, 5000m, 10,000m and 3000m steeplechase had been taken ill in recent days.
He broke the world records in those events in the late 1970s before breaking his own world record in the 5000m a few years later.
In 2019 Rono returned home from the United States where he has been living since 1986.
Athletic Kenya has paid tribute to the runner as a pacesetter for the country’s current generation of athletes.
