Chairperson of the African Union Commission has called for an urgent dialogue to address the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict.
Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat said this after a phone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday.
“I received a call from Russian foreign minister Sergei,” tweeted Mahamat. “I stressed for the need to respect international law and urged for dialogue for a peaceful solution to the conflict between #Russia and #Ukraine.”
The conflict, which started on Feb. 24, led to one of the largest displacements of civilians in recent history, sparking outrage across the globe.
Meanwhile, reports revealed that the Russia-Ukraine conflict has rocked several countries in Africa, particularly net importers of commodities.
Data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization showed that the Food Price Index averaged 159.3 points in March, up 12.6 percent from February, when it had already reached its highest level since its inception in 1990.
