Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani met on Friday in Nouakchott with former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who is visiting as part of his campaign for the presidency of the African Union Commission.
President El Ghazouani, who also serves as the current Chairperson of the African Union, welcomed a Kenyan delegation led by Raila Odinga on January 24 in Nouakchott, according to a statement from the Mauritanian Prime Minister’s office.
Discussions focused on bilateral relations between Mauritania and Kenya, as well as strategies to enhance cooperation between the two nations. The Kenyan delegation praised El Ghazouani’s leadership in advancing African interests during his tenure as AU Chairperson.
Raila Odinga is touring the continent to campaign for the African Union Commission presidency, with the election slated for February 2025. Other declared candidates include Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Mauritius’ Anil Gayan.
The meeting was attended by Nany Ould Chrougha, Minister of the Presidential Council, and Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
